After a drive taking 8 hours 35 minutes this is the house we rented in Gairloch. We have stopped here before and like the elevated position above the village.

Well the plan was 4 fishing trips during the week but we only managed 2 because of the weather and a stomach bug so here are the story’s.
On the Sunday the mark was Rua Rheidh lighthouse, a mark I have fished with success over the years. It’s a 13 mile drive from the house to the lighthouse and most of it is single track road, this link is for the lighthousehttp://www.ruareidh.co.uk/
Parking 400 yards short of the lighthouse the mark is about 200 feet down grass cliffs, the mark is the indentation on the left of this photo, and the top of the lighthouse can be seen in the second one, and a view looking down onto the mark is after that.

This is a big Pollock mark but we were fishing in a 35 mph SW which because of the depth of water means you don’t get breakers its just large rollers. We really had to have our wits about us as the odd rogue one does turn up. We used lures, Shads, deep spun Shads and sandeel but sadly it was a blank. I have never fished it in conditions like that so will blame that.
Had a trip to the Badachro Inn one day, anyone for fishing from the pub decking, this is low tide.

Early Friday morning saw Mark and I push off to a new mark at Red Point. This is primarily a clean ground mark with patches of weed and rock. Baits used were sticky black and sandeel and researched showed this to be a good Thornback mark. It was a 14 mile drive to the mark on single track road and here is the first sight we had of it. Its opposite the isle of Raasay and the Isle of Skye.

We blanked again but watching Terns and Gannets dive bombing fish and Commorants and Snipe diving from the surface was breath taking. I have to say this is by far the most beautiful place I have ever fished.
Will I try it again, you bet.

Ingredients
For the Dumplings
450gm of white fish, ideally Cod.
1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon of cornflower
1 egg yolk
3 tablespoons of chopped coriander.
1.6 litres of fish stock.

For the sauce
2 teaspoons of ground nut oil
2 garlic cloves finely chopped
4 spring onions trimmed and finely sliced
2 tablespoons of dry sherry
1 tablespoon of sweet chilli sauce
1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
6 tablespoons of crème fraiche

Chop the fish into chunks and place in a food processor with the soy sauce, cornflower and egg yolk. Blend until smooth then add the coriander and blend for a few seconds. Transfer to a bowl, cover and place in the fridge for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes shape the mixture into walnut size balls and place in the fridge for a further 30 minutes.

Pour the stock into a pan and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat so that it gently simmers. Add the fish dumplings and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until cooked through.

For the sauce, heat the oil in a small saucepan then add the garlic and spring onions and cook until golden. Stir in the sherry, chilli, soy sauce and lemon juice then remove immediately from the heat. Season with salt and pepper.

Remove the dumplings from the stock and serve with the sauce drizzled over.

the start of a new season with w.b.a.c .
our 1st match got of to a flying start with our new boat THE HERON
we all arrived at the slip about 12 boats out today weather wasnt as bad as last year, it was pretty mild

we all set of for 9am and headed to our chosen marks as it was a flattie hunt for the biggest most species
we chose our mark from last year which gave us 3rd overall and biggest plaice so we head off to the rock channel and anchored up
bait was fresh lug rag frozen crab fish baits .
we had to get a flounder dab plaice and a big ask a sole but hopes were high as bateys 1st drop produced a cracking 1lb 05 plaice

a great start , as for me my 1st drop produced a good flounder way hey 2nd fish in the bag , well that was it for a few hrs me batey
lucky couldnt catch a single dab here so up and off to vale park see if there was any about , lucky the dab master couldnt get us out of stuck here either, so last chance saloon with 30 mins to go up and full throttle it had to be perch rock and yes it paid off with lucky hitting the dabs straight off 3 out of 4 and in we went happy chaps
at the weight in there was only 2 boats with all 3 so we was in with a chance, the presentation and results was on wed
were we received our trophy for biggest plaice 2012 on the san miguel winning team me lucky paul and batey

we also did better this year we won the match and got the biggest plaice again
and joint biggest flounder so a great result for our new boat the heron could be taking the trophy for the second year

it was a great 1st match with a top crew lucky p and batey
good news too the bass are in yayyyyyyyy

Been using this for a while now, all I can say is that they live upto the hype. I bought an Avet 5.3 mxc, and fisherfolk seem to be comparing the two, the Fathom wins hands down in my opinion. It’s an animal of a reel, smooth as anything and casts great too. Ok distances aren’t the same as say an Abu 6500 but distances aren’t far off. Its best feature has to be its unbelievable cranking power. At times its hard to tell if there’s a fish on the end of the line. Great for rock marks, marks like the Gynn and in weedy conditions. It also doubles up nicely for a light boat fishing reel. I bought mine online but, Malc at Abc Tackle in Beaumaris sells them for £110, a decent saving compared to internet prices. I like them that much that I’ve bought the Fathom 20. I’ve not tried it yet but, this reel looks to be good for the rockiest of marks and fishing a Shad. If any of you are looking for a reel thats built like a tank, smooth as silk and casts great then you won’t go far wrong with the fathoms.

As you know I like fishing in the Ribble estuary from time to time and I got a lot of feedback from my session last September.

http://www.northwestdonkers.com/foru…on-a-26.5-tide

Would anyone want to do the opposite of the report above and fish low water into the chanel from the training wall. By doing low water you can familiarise yourself with the layout of the estuary and later in the year I will do a session like last September for those that want to give it a try.

So the proposed Donk is Saturday 9 March with low tide being just after 16.00 hours. Fishing would be two hours down to low then an hour up as sunset is at 18.05. The meeting place would be the North end of Fairhaven Lake where you can either park on the road or use the pay and display. Low is a 1.5 metre and if we catch, you all know what happens on a Donk, it will most probably be flatties. We wont be walking as far out as I did in September.

After coming off the beach I intend to move to a high water mark and fish High which is a 8.8m at 21.42.

Anyone interested.

This mammoth blue shark could have tipped the scales at nearly 250lb, smashing the British record in the process.

But Bob Pollard decided to release the monster specimen rather than kill it, meaning it can never be claimed.

Length and girth calculations put the shark at 248lb, well above both the long-standing 218lb British boat-caught best and the 222lb blue shark taken by Wayne Little in 2010 which was also returned alive, but the 43-year-old builder had no intention of taking the fish back to shore to be weighed.

Bob, who snared the predator while aboard the vessel Bite Adventures, out of Penzance in Cornwall, said: “There’s no way I’d murder that fish. A British record sounds nice but I wouldn’t kill a fish for it.”
The Shark Club of Great Britain member, who had a 118lb blue shark earlier this year, was out with experienced captain Chippy Chapman and a group of other anglers.

“It was a fair day out, that’s for sure,” laughed Bob.

“It didn’t really sink in at first, I just thought ‘that’s a big shark’ but when Chippy shook my hand immediately and said it was a 200lb’er I just couldn’t believe it.

“It finally hit home on the way back in when we were looking at the photos, which don’t really do it as much justice as actually seeing the beast. It’s difficult to comprehend how fat the thing was – it was so out of proportion.”

The shark, which measured 98 inches long and 45 inches around the middle, took a mackerel flapper 30ft off the bottom in 250ft of water.

Bob said: “When the reel clicked it was a long way from the boat. There’s 300yds of braid, plus backing, on the reel and after its first run I could see the knot. It was probably a good half an hour before I got it in. It put a fair old bend in the rod and I was strumming the braid like a guitar at times.”

Trevor Cozens, who photographed the capture, said: “It was an incredible fish. My personal view is that it seems a madness you have to kill a fish to claim it. You don’t in coarse fishing, as long as you’ve weighed it and got the correct witnesses. I accept there are a lot of issues with weighing a fish on a boat but maybe recording length and girth is the way forward.”
